Black and White Art - Abstract

The problem with colour is that I do love black and white abstract artworks. There is something powerful about he lack of colour, or almost no colour. The works that allure me the most are the ones that have a little colour but are largely purely black and white. There can be so much variation in the warmth or coolness of whites and blacks.

I also think with the absence of colour it is more akin to drawing and writing, despite it being painting. With all these works, Malevich, Kline, Hilma af Klint, Pape, Moholy-Nagy and Theo van Doesburg. The reduction of elements, the absence of colour, allows us to see the thinking or problem they are thinking through. The ideas of Constructivism resonate with me on their combination of the physical properties of the media with spatial presence. It is fascinating how the diagram searched through by Hilma af Klint explores religion and our place in the world. Franz Kline’s action drawings on such a large scale compared to small pencil strokes. The world appeals in the carefully constructed composition, arrangements of negative space and positive black lines. I energy of black lines is aggressive but alluring.
