New Landscapes
I have been exploring landscapes again, enjoying the challenge of suggesting space with subtle restraint whilst preserving the authenticity of my materials and media. I seek the feeling I find in Tanguy's landscapes or Celmins' starscapes—that sense of emptiness anchored by a solid centre, a space the viewer can inhabit.
I recall reading in an anthropology book that viewing empty landscapes feels reassuring because we can spot approaching threats or potential prey. Perhaps this vantage point offers something akin to ownership—a sense of control over the terrain before us. These landscapes aren't of specific places, though they're not intended as purely internal worlds either. I think they create a kind of mental living space within our consciousness, perhaps connecting to ideas that underpin Surrealism.
Currently, these recent works are small in scale, but I'm drawn to return to the larger pieces I created before. So much of my practice moves in cycles—I find myself revisiting works from my youth, from college, from China, from before China. Through this thoughts section, I want to share some of these earlier works, partly so I can better understand how they fit within my current practice.
